Just Added to Our Portland Roster!

We are so very pleased to announce the addition of Margaret Aden — an extremely talented jewelry artist and metalworker — to our Portland Art & Soul Retreat! She's got some really awesome classes that we just had to add to our lineup. And... most of them don't even require you to bring supplies! How great is that?

As a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and former Naval Officer, Margaret traveled extensively and draws upon many cultural influences when creating her funky, modern designs. Currently, she is exploring textures achieved by weaving and traditional silversmith techniques, along with the creation of unique patinas. Her passion for rocks, fossils and found objects permeates her work. Check out the beautiful projects she has in store for you...

Open Back Bezels
Have you ever had a really strangely shaped item you want to set? Well you can solve that conundrum in this innovative class where you'll learn the Open Back Bezel technique. Inspired by a trip to Italy and the fantastic pottery shards to be found along the Amalfi Coast—this style of setting was born from a quest to allow the unique nature of these focal pieces to shine through—on both sides. You'll get to create several settings to really get the feel for the technique. All materials and tools will be available in class, students do not have to bring a single item with them!

Woven Wire Basket
In this workshop, you will learn the basic construction of woven wire baskets. Multiple wire armatures or single large gauge armatures will be chosen. You'll get to change wire colors, gauges and even incorporate fiber as you choose. Finish your creation with plain ends or Margaret's Sea Anemone ends... both will be demonstrated in class, as well as baskets with a base and those without. No supplies to bring!

Open Back Bezel & Tapered Woven Cuff
Break two rules in one class: open back bezel and weaving into a taper. What!?! The innovative Open Back Bezel technique will have you rethinking the standard bezel along with what can and cannot be captured in a setting. In addition, you get to break the Golden Weaving Rule—Thou shalt not weave into a taper. The simple and elegant lines of this cuff creates a stunning look on the wrist. Alas, Margaret will share the secret of its construction so you too can partake of the bounty of this beauty. If you are ready to work with Fire and Wire, then we'll see you in class! Kits are in copper and include written directions. All tools and supplies for the class are supplied in the kit and by the instructor. Your carry on will thank you!
